Dear Students

Tomorrow there is a degree school committee meeting that I must attend it will take place at 1:00 and should last at least an hour.

Tutorials will start at 10:30 and there will be 15 minute slots.
since tomorrow is a fractured day and there are a few of you that still do not show up for things like crits and tutorials I then leave it to you to email me back before 6:00pm tonight to ask for a slot of time. It will be a first come first serve system. that means the first person to mail me gets the first time slot, got it!

Next week the plan is to have portfolio checks. This will mean that you will be expected to bring in your entire years work in the format that you intend to submit to the final review tables. So if you have been waiting to print out your work now is the time to do it!!!!! please!!!

Just as I mentioned today in tutorials, you are to meet Michael in the Bar on the 1st floor of the AA. You should be at least 10 minutes early to the time that you have been allotted in order to avoid delays.

For tomorrow you will need the following things when you meet with Michael!

1. Bring your entire portfolio!
2. Bring photos of all of your models!
3. Bring the specific drawings that he has asked you to produce from last Wednesday’s tutorials!
4. A 300 word outline of the relations taking place in the design and the technical issues that you intend to pursue!

For Wednesday the 2nd!
Just as last week we have arranged tutorials with Michael Hensel.
These tutorials will not take place at UEL! They will be at the Architectural Association School of Architecture!!! (http://www.aaschool.ac.uk/Default.aspx?section=school&page=contact )

We will make the list tomorrow for the technical tutorials with Michael.

By the way I am not happy about the following people missing the tutorials last Wednesday! Jeremy, Taesik, and Ketan!!!! Do not mess around with my invited colleagues! It would be better if you just did not sign up for a tutorial if you have no intention of taking part! This is one of the main factors in why Michael will not come out to UEL to see the unit and why it has been arranged to take place at the AA-school.

Michael has requested that you all must bring the following materials with you;

1. Bring your entire portfolio!
2. Bring photos of all of your models!
3. Bring the specific drawings that he has asked you to produce from last Wednesday’s tutorials!
4. A 300 word outline of the relations taking place in the design and the technical issues that you intend to pursue!

There are 4 weeks until the final review tables begin! There is no time to waste!!!!

Oh yes, your supporting studies should be completed and handed in. If you are still working on them and not working on your project prepare yourself for working on the unit design work over summer and a September review!

See you tomorrow.

Tomorrow Tuesday the 24th we will be having a Pin-Up!
We would like to begin at 10:30 so do not be late.

Please do not treat this like you did the final review last term!!!!

Also I have rearranged times for tutorials with Michael Hensel. He will be able to see you on Wednesday the 25th.
Since you have no more supporting studies events on Wednesday seeing Michael should be no problem.

Friday the 16th

Dear Students,

For Friday the 16th.

We will be doing 2 things.

First we will be meeting as a unit to discuss the article that you were given by Robin Evans.
Read the article! I may ask you to speak about it on Friday!

The second part of the day will be a Drawing/ Design workshop.

For this you will need:
1. Drawings, printed out at 1:100 scale! You should have sections, plans, and axos of the site. Most of you had this on Tuesday….
2. Detail trace paper, the cheap stuff you get in rolls.
3. Tape, not blue tac, tape! To stick the drawings on the wall.
4. Pens, pencils, markers, etc…. stuff to draw with!
5. Additional tools are welcome, such as scales, straight edges, triangles.

The schedule will be:

10:30 meet in the unit space to discuss the essay.
12:30 pin up site drawings in atrium space.
12:00 start workshop.

All the best

March 08, 2007

Friday the 9th! read this!!!

Dear Students,

Read this email!

Due to an unforeseen scheduling mishap this Friday’s tutorials with Michael Hensel have been postponed.
So that means no tutorials tomorrow!

But that does not mean that you have the day off and you do not have to do some work.
There will be tutorials on Tuesday next week and I expect to see what you were going to show on Friday, plus 4 more days worth of work.
You were all asked to have the basic plans, sections, elevations, axos, etc….I want to see them and more on Tuesday!

Use the free Friday with effect! After Friday you then have 9 weeks of term time until the review tables.
Those of you that can’t seen to make tutorials on time or at all.
Guess what, you can still be withdrawn from the course based on attendance even at this time of the year.
For those of you that were present during the past few weeks you were given an essay written by Robin Evans called Figures, Doors and Passages.

Read it! This is not suggested reading this is part of the coursework and it may get you thinking about what you are doing or could do in your project.
Next week we will discuss this essay! If you did not get the essay from me contact your team mates to get a copy of it.

All the best

Tuesday the 6th

Dear Students,

Download file

Ok we are now over the mid part of the year! The past 3 weeks have had its ups and downs for everyone.

I need to stress to all of you that having a semi good mid review table does not mean that you can cost the rest of the way to the end of year review.
You must all keep the pace and for most of you, up the pace as the remainder of the year heads to a conclusion.
I presume the week after the mid-reviews were used effectively and that you all submitted your essays for History and Theory.

The Open jury was a very good event and I think that for the most part the unit represented itself well. It would have been nice if the entire unit were there as well. Those that did not attend, it has been noted!

The technical week, well I think some of you decided that you wanted to put yourselves in a very bad position with Alan Chandler and not show up. Success! You have achieved it!! Those that decided to give the week a miss you should speak to Alan about making up what ever went on. You also missed an opportunity to make strides in your own work. It was evident on Friday with the crit, those that took the week seriously have put them selves in a good position to move into more developed proposals. Oh and the comment or shall I call it an excuse “we have not started designing yet!” just won’t cut it! Those that did not take the week seriously must start to do so!!!!

Just to bring things more into focus, there are 12 weeks until the review tables begin. This includes the 2 week Easter holiday. So really you have 10 weeks of term time. In that time you must all have finely tuned propositions for the Multi Family Dwelling project. Did I say for a shopping centre? Or a park? Or a restaurant? No!!! For a Multi Family Dwelling, you have the brief, and have had it since November! So get to it!!!

The plan for next week is this;

Tuesday we will be having individual tutorials with all of you. We will see these tutorials as a way to clear the air for the rest of the year. We hope to discus the mid reviews, if you have any questions, and to give you feedback from us on your progress so far this year.

There are a few things that we will be expecting to see from all of you next Tuesday as well. We must see of your site, 1 plan, 2 cross sections, 2 elevations, and an axonometric. These need to be drawn with a sufficient level of detail and have to be at a scale of 1:100! They must be printed!!!!!!!!!!! Or drawn by hand!!!!!!!!! We will not look at screens!!!!!!!!! There must be paper with the drawings on them.

Friday there is another session arranged with Michael Hensel. I expect to see some very serious progress and intelligence from all of you next week. In order to have more fruitful exchanges with Michael then we have had in the past.

Tutorial times for Tuesday March 6th:

Please bring your copy of the review sheet from the mid year review!
If you did not receive one that means you have not been given it by me. So I probably have it.
Also, please be on time and please let us know you are there and waiting to be seen. This will push the pace of the day and get us all back to getting on with work.

3rd years will be seen early in the day.

10:30 Aras Burak Sen
10:50 Chang Liu
11:10 Jonathan Jordan
11:30 Richard Hale
11:50 Taesik Seo
12:10 Bara Safarova
12:30 Jaspal Chana

Friday we will be seeing Michael in the Team tutorial format, an email will follow for the Friday when we get closer to it.

I also suggest that you all go to the Diploma Unit 9 website to see how they are using the blog and to see there work. You will learn something!

structural week!

Dear Students,

Just a reminder that on Tuesday you will be expected to deliver what was asked of you to produce on Monday! We will have a progress check and desktop tutorials of some sort Tuesday. They will have to fit arround the seminars that Alan has scheduled.

Also if you have questions about the Structural Models brief speak with me. Alan Chandler did not write this brief, Dagmar from Unit C and I did.
Word has come to me that some of you have been asking Alan about what to do etc…. the brief is very clear. So get to it please.

Since there have been no emails concerning the brief for next week I assume that most of you know what to do and are getting on with it.
I think it will be a very important week for making some strides in your work and it has the potential to be fun too.

See you Tuesday!

February 19, 2007

Tuesday the 20th!

Dear students,

Tomorrow we will be meeting in the unit space at 10:30!
The plan for tomorrow is to have a unit meeting before we meet with the visiting professor, Rodrigo Perez de Arce, which is scheduled for 11:30.
Please be on time!

We will discuss the review tables, next week’s technical week, and the open jury that happens Friday.
Like I said in a previous message bring your portfolios tomorrow please.

On another subject, you should all check the diploma unit 9 web blog www.diploma-unit-9.net and check out how they are using it. Most of the students have there portfolios on-line. You may learn a few things.

Last thing, I believe some time next week we want make some new studio and unit space arrangements with the diploma students. We want to set it up for the remainder of the year so it makes it easier to work and be in. we will discus this more tomorrow!

Oh, and those of you that missed the open jury today, you missed a good opportunity to see what is happening.

See you tomorrow!

Jeff

February 07, 2007

Friday the 9th!

Dear students,

This Friday we will be having tutorials with Michael Hensel.
You should bring all relevant work with you so that we can have productive discussion.
You should be able to discuss;

• What you will be taking forward from the first terms material, structural, spatial, formal investigations in the single person dwelling project into the Multifamily dwelling project.
• What issues / conditions you will possibly be working with based on the team site investigations and what you site is.
• What your understanding of the multifamily dwelling is and what your spatial and technical strategic intentions are.

We will be meeting in teams for these sessions and we will be starting at 12:00.

12:00, Random 5

1:15, Neocortex

2:30, UniteD

3:45, The Dogs

They are predicting that on Thursday and Friday that London will be getting a snow storm that may cause travel problems across the city.
Check the web-log and your Email to see if Friday is postponed.

Remember to practice your presentation for the review tables next week. you will have 10-15 minutes max to present your work!!!!

See you Friday!

Jeff

friday the 2nd, tuesday the 6th, and friday the 9th!

Dear students

I am back from a very good trip that took me to Iceland to see a project of mine under construction. Amazing how things change when vast amounts of real materials are involved! Anyway due to me being happy with the progress and my high levels of exhaustion there will be no tutorials on Friday the 2nd of February.

So then tutorials will take place on Tuesday the 6th.
We will be expecting to see progress on the individual work and we want to see your portfolio in its entirety!!!!

The times will be:
10:30 – Neocortex, just to let this team know I am not happy with the way things have been going the past few weeks! I think it may be the lack of group dynamic, or is it lack of group members…. Sort it out or I will!

11:45 –Random 5

2:00 – The Dogs

3:15 – UniteD

Those of you that decided to not attend tutorials this past week with Tom it has been noted and logged. Let’s hope it does not come back to haunt you…..

Remember Friday the 9th we will be joined by our technical tutor Michael Hensel. Do not be late, do not come empty handed, do not leave your brain at home!

You have been warned!!!

Final issue in this mail: post your progress on the blog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See you then!

Along with this are some notes indicating where you should be with your work each week leading up to the review.

Also I will be posting last terms attendance on the blog as a PDF file check this to see where you stand in regards to the new attendance policy the school now uses. This can be found in the new hand book. I believe you can download this from the UEL website.

Degree Unit D Friday the 12th & the site diary!

Dear students

I am not happy to see that the new year is starting of in a frantic manner and that your supporting studies are already starting to cut into vital studio days.
I will be canceling tutorials this Friday for all due to the unapproved and short noticed scheduling of a Site visit this Friday ( a studio day ) for the site diary submission.
I am not happy about this and I will make it know in a very vocal and belligerent manner if this mode of operation continues into the remainder of the year. In the future please contact me before you settle on a date that will conflict with the studios scheduling and remember you have 5 other days of the week to arrange and complete the supporting studies submissions that are vital to your successful completion of the course.

This is mainly aimed at the 2nd year students but for the benefit of the 3rd years that still have an array of supporting studies to submit in history and theory, technical, and professional studies remember this warning.

We will be having tutorials on Tuesday and I will be expecting to see progress that equates to 6 days worth of production on the current work, in addition will be expecting to see the 2nd years site diary work too. If you are using studio time which is my time I want to see what you are doing with it. So have it at some level completion by then.

Tuesday the 28th!

Dear students

This Tuesday we will be having a drawing workshop.
This means you must have some drawings with you to pin up, on paper and of appropriate size!
We will meet at 10:30 in the unit space!
We will also sort out the team names Tuesday as well.

I hope the photo workshop was helpful to most of you. But remember this phase of work is not a photography project!
Use the photographic media more precisely and effectively!

Those that have not been attending since the unit trip that you should get in contact with your team to get this phase of work moving. If you are not contributing to the group work you can not access or claim any of the work that is produced by the group.
If you have medical issues you should contact Mark Hayduk and let him know the situation so it is on record.

See you Tuesday,

Jeff

November 23, 2006

Friday the 24th

Dear students,

This Friday we will be having a workshop with professional photographer Cristobal Palma.
Go to his website to see some of his work. www.cristobalpalma.com .

The aim of the workshop is to develop a strategic method of capturing information through your photos.
You will have to bring in the work the teams have collected so far on the site. (You should have done some site visits by now!)
So that Cristobal can get introduced to what the teams have been looking at so far.

The unit will be meeting at UEL at 10:30.
We will be going to site also and you will need to bring your cameras. So charge them and make sure you have enough free disk space, if you are working with digital.

Best,

Jeff

As you should all know next Tuesday the 7th we will be having a final review of the single dwelling project. The 1st term schedule is on the web-log!!!!

There will be guests invited to the review so there are a few protocols on the day that I expect everyone to follow;
1. Be on time.
2. You must all be in attendance for the whole day. Do not disappear after you have shown your work!!!
3. We intend to start reviewing work at 10:30, this means that you must be there and already pinned up in order to not delay the start of the day.
4. If you are more then 30 minutes late you may not be able to have your work reviewed.
5. first person to arrive should start pinning up there work.

Here are some additional suggestions in preparation for the review;
1. Do not work all through the night before a review day. This does no one any good! You will be so tired you will not remember any criticism that may help your progress and you will fall a sleep during the other presentations and will miss other discussions that might be helpful.
2. Organize your time effectively and efficiently. Do not expect to be able to print out your work for the review on the day. If things can go wrong they will….. Better to get your work printed out days in advance if you can.
3. Please do not make the review panel have to look at your work on your tiny little laptop screen. Get your work on paper!!!!!!!!
4. Practice makes perfect, measure twice cut once! I suggest that you rehearse your presentation verbally and how you will pin you work in the wall. Don’t wait till the morning to figure out how to pin-up your work. This will take you more time that you think and it may distract the panel away from your project if you pin it up in the wrong sequence.
5. You have 7 days until Tuesday. That is tons of time if you use it effectively.

For Friday the 3rd.
Friday will be an in studio work day. I will be in from 10:30 and will most likely leave after lunch. I will be around to discuss your work as you are doing it and I may be able to give tutorials on a first come first serve basis. You should treat Friday as an opportunity to get on with the production of your work.

Good luck!

Jeff

Workshop Day 1

Dear Students,

I hope that yesterday was helpful to all of you. I would have to say the majority of you are on the right track and are producing very exciting work. I also believe that yesterday also served as a wakeup call to those that needed it.
That said, what I believe you all can improve upon is your drawing and representation skills. I have to say both Tom and I were disappointed that the majority of the unit had not gotten there work into a presentable format, and some of you had not printed out your work. We find this unacceptable and so should all of you. So lets not have this as an issue for the rest of the year please.

Has everyone paid the 100 pound studio/ materials fee? If not you must do it. If you do not pay the fee we will not be able to have outside experts come in to work with the Unit like we had yesterday.

Use the blog! I expect everyone to make at least 2 entries a week on it with regards to your work. By doing this you can use this to get additional feed back fro Tom and I. I said additional not instead of attending on the days you are supposed to.

I hope you are all ready for Friday! Remember you will need a PC computer that runs windows.

For those of you that ridiculously missed Michael's presentation yesterday he will be giving a lecture at London Metropolitan University Thursday night 6:30pm. You should attend and some of you may want to see what he has to say again if it was confusing the first time.
London Met is on Holloway Road, here is a link to street-map.co.uk http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=531349&y=185014&z=0&sv=N7+8JL&st=2&pc=N7+8JL&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf

Best,

Jeff

Friday the 13th & the coming week!

Dear students,

This Friday we will be meeting at 11:00 am, hopefully, in the AVA computer room in order to be introduced to the web-log website.
If you have checked the website you will have seen that your names are now posted there and if you click the name you should be brought to your individual web-log.
In the morning I will be introducing the blog and how to access it, post texts and images. After being shown how to do it you will then be expected to post examples of the work you have produced so far this year on it. We will meet again after lunch to look at what has been posted and too resolve any problems you may have had in this task. So bring examples of work in digital format to post on the blog. Get scanning now!
If time allows I may be able to have tutorials with those that desperately need one. Oh yes if you have made progress since Tuesday bring in documentation to post.
Check you email for your log in info!

Next week!
Next week we will be having a modeling workshop week.
It is very straight forward what will be expected of you during next week. You are expected to make your prototype and to develop it further towards the single person dwelling.
On Tuesday we will be joined by Michael Hensel who is the unit’s technical tutor this year. In order to inform Michael of your individual project and your progress you are all expected to have you portfolios up to date and in a presentable format. I told some of you that you should not wait to get your portfolio together, this is the reason why.
More will be explained on Friday.

See you all on Friday,

Jeff

For Tuesday the 3rd of October.

Dear Students,

We will be meeting in the school on Tuesday at 10:30 am in the space where you had interviews with me last week.
We will be having a unit meeting in the morning and then we will have a mini pin-up in the afternoon on the first brief that was given last week.
Don’t get nervous about the pin up!
But do bring your work with you! Drawing, sketches, models, etc… we want to see work!
If you think you don’t understand the brief try to and attempt something. Showing up with no work at all is far worse then attempting and failing!

Check the contact list posted on the blog. Please check your cell-phone and email details. If they are wrong email me the correct information.
Also, the unit web blog. I will be setting it up this week. I will give an intro to posting work on it in the next week so stay tuned.

All the best and see you Tuesday!

Jeff
